Trend Report: Procurement

Placeholder

Hi, I’m Jemma, Head of Procurement at Primark. Procurement is changing, and fast. The world around us is evolving, and with it, the expectations of what procurement can and should deliver. From AI to ESG, the trends shaping our function are pushing us to think bigger, act smarter, and lead with purpose.

The Trends Driving Change

Right now, we’re seeing a wave of innovation in procurement. Generative AI and automation are streamlining everything from sourcing to contract management. AI agents are taking on routine tasks, freeing us up to focus on category management and strategic initiatives that drive real value.

Procurement orchestration platforms are also transforming how we work – enabling self-service models, predictive analytics, and real-time decision-making across the business. At the same time, we’re diversifying our supplier base and building more resilient sourcing strategies.

But it’s not just about tech and risk. Internal satisfaction and stakeholder experience are now key performance metrics. We’re focusing more than ever on collaboration and co-creation of value.

What Excites Me Most

What excites me most about all of this is the opportunity to reimagine procurement as a strategic, value-driving function. We’re moving away from being a back-office process and integrating ourselves within our stakeholder communities. That means closer collaboration, stronger alignment with strategic goals, and a real seat at the table.

It’s also an exciting time for talent. The demand for new skills, especially in AI, data analytics, and sustainability, gives us a chance to build high-performing, future-ready teams. We’re shaping a dynamic, innovative procurement culture that not only drives long-term value but also attracts the next generation of procurement professionals.

There’s no doubt about it; there’s a need for change. And we’re embracing it.

How We’re Responding at Primark

At Primark, we’re in the middle of a major procurement transformation. We’re implementing a new Procurement Operating Model that touches every part of how we work – people, process, policy, data, and technology.

Our new model is built around three key pillars:

Pink Star

cost

We’re driving measurable value through high spend under management, structured multi-year delivery plans, optimised buying channels, and clear P&L impact.

compliance

We’re strengthening compliance with robust supplier due diligence, high contract coverage, fewer retrospective POs, and proactive risk management.

customer

We’re enhancing the stakeholder experience with a single point of engagement, automated policy management, streamlined processes, and a user-friendly supplier portal.

This transformation is about more than just efficiency—it’s about unlocking the full potential of procurement to support our business, our people, and our purpose.
